Public service law amendment approved

The Advisory Council of the interim government has approved the draft of the Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, subject to legal vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division of the Ministry of Law.

The decision was made at a meeting of the Advisory Council held on Thursday at the Chief Advisor‍‍`s Office in Tejgaon, Dhaka, chaired by Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus.

While specific details of the ordinance were not disclosed, the original draft prepared by the Ministry of Public Administration includes provisions that allow for disciplinary action against government employees for certain behaviors.

These include activities that undermine discipline, incite disobedience, or obstruct duties. Specific acts such as unauthorized absence, inciting others to neglect duty, or interfering with official responsibilities may be considered misconduct under the amendment. Penalties proposed include demotion, dismissal, or removal from service.

The proposed changes are said to revisit elements from earlier service rules, aligning them with the current Public Service Act, 2018.

The meeting also discussed the recommendations of the Reform Commission.

Ministries and divisions have been asked to provide opinions through the Cabinet Division on the feasibility, implementation timeline, and potential impact of these recommendations. The Cabinet Division will coordinate this process.

Additionally, the Council approved drafts of the Protection and Conservation of Fish (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, a memorandum of understanding between Bangladesh and the Netherlands on naval defense cooperation, and the Ordinance on Welfare and Rehabilitation of Families of Victims and Injured Citizens of the July Uprising, 2025.
