Bangladesh welcomes recognition of Palestine by four Western countries

Bangladesh has welcomed the recent recognition of Palestine as a state by four influential Western countries—Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Portugal. The statement was made by Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain.

Speaking to journalists at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Sunday (22 September), Touhid Hossain reiterated Bangladesh’s longstanding support for the Palestinian people.

Although no formal statement has yet been issued by the government, he described the recognition as “welcome news” and a step toward Palestine’s full independence. He added, however, that the Palestinian people still have a long way to go to achieve complete sovereignty.

The adviser also noted that France, another major Western country, is expected to recognize Palestine soon. If this happens, Palestine would receive recognition from four of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.

Md. Touhid Hossain is currently in New York to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. He left Dhaka for New York late on Friday night (19 September).
