A security guard of the library of Dhaka University (DU) was caught red-handed while extorting money from an illegal mobile shop in front of the central library of the university.
The accused security guard`s name is Noor Alam.
Noor Alam was caught by a group of university students while extorting money at Hakim Chattar of the university campus on Sunday (February 17) around 9:30 pm. At that time, he was taking Tk 200 from shopkeeper Md Arif.
Several students who witnessed this said that Arif has been running a pickle shop illegally for a long time on the roadside of Hakim Chattar of the campus. It is known that he gives money to Noor Alam every day as a `rent` to sit in this place. Despite giving Tk 200 as Saturday`s rent Noor Alam demanded more money. Nearby students caught them red-handed while the duo locked into altercation over the extortion money. At that time, Nur Alam had two notes of Tk100 in hand, paid by Arif, claimed the witnesses.
Nur Alam said, "I did not take any money. He himself gave me money for some refreshment. What do I have to do if he offers me money?"
The Librarian of DU Professor Nasiruddin Munshi, who is the chief of accused`s office, said, "We will look in to the matter soon."
Although the university authorities do no allow such street vendors inside the campus, there have been many unauthorized mobile shops of weight measuring, Fuchka stalls and flower shops.
Samtaj Begum was sitting on the roadside with a flower shop. When asked who gave approval for the shop, she mentioned the name of Tanbir Hasan Shaikat, general secretary of the DU branch of Chhatra League. When Shaikat was contacted over phone to inquire about the matter, he said that he did not know about this matter and the woman is lying.
Meanwhile, Samtaj changed her tone after communicating with Shaikat. Then she mentioned about a man with curly hair who is a companion of Saikat. But she could not provide his name or identity. At the same time, she repeatedly mentioned that she is suffering from cancer.
Next to it, Mustafa was sitting with a weighing machine. He also has no permission to sit there. But he regularly sits here paying `rents`.
In this regard, the Proctor of the University Md. Maksudur Rahman said, "We will take action against him soon. Payra Chattar security staff could be behind setting up these illegal shops in TSC."
