Two pistols were found in the room of Mostafizur Rahman Babu, the president of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of Rajshahi University (RU). In addition, several local weapons were recovered by protesting students, who also found bottles of foreign liquor in the room.
On Tuesday, July 16: Police acting on a random tip around 5 pm, the weapons were discovered during a second round of vandalism at the university’s Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall. During the incident, students vandalized around 20 rooms belonging to BCL leaders and activists, including rooms 230 and 231 of the BCL president, throwing furniture outside and setting them on fire.
Earlier, around 3 pm, students broke through the main gate of the university with a procession carrying sticks, having marched from the nearby Binodpur market. They toured various streets and set a motorcycle on fire at Bangabandhu Hall. They then continued their procession around different parts of the campus, before returning for a second round of vandalism and setting furniture on fire at the hall.
Ammar, the coordinator of the quota reform movement at RU, stated, “We found pistols in the room of the BCL president and local weapons in the room of the general secretary at Bangabandhu Hall.”
Efforts to reach the university’s Proctor, Professor Dr. Asabul Haque, for comments on the matter were unsuccessful.
