Police-student clashes ongoing in Dhaka University

A clash between agitating students and the police is going on in Mall Chattar area of ​​Dhaka University on Wednesday. 

Students were seen throwing bricks in response to sound grenades and tear gas shells lobbed by police. 

This clash started after 4:30pm on Wednesday, according to our correspondent.

Students have taken position in front of Masterda Surja Sen Hall. A large number of police have been stationed near the residence of the Vice-Chancellor.

The agitating students failed to perform the Gayebana Janaza (funeral prayer in absentia) at TSC this afternoon due to police obstruction. 

Later, they offered funeral prayers in front of the Vice-Chancellor‍‍`s (VC) residence. After the funeral, the students started the procession with the symbolic coffin in the campus. 

At a time, the police threw sound grenades and lobbed tear gas shells one after another at their procession. The students dispersed. They gathered again in front of Surja Sen Hall.

When asked about the attack on the students‍‍` procession, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty told that the procession was dispersed with the permission of the DU VC for the sake of the security of the VC‍‍`s residence and surroundings.

On the other hand, Hasnat Abdullah, one of the coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement (Boishommo Birodhi Chhatra Andolon), the platform which spearhead the quota movement this time, said that they started the procession peacefully after the Gayebana Janaza. The police attacked there, he claimed. 

Moreover, leaders and activists of BNP clashed with police in front of the National Mosque Baitul Mukarram on Wednesday while bringing out a procession after a gayebana janaza.
