Tourist Vessel Catches Fire at Cox’s Bazar Jetty

A passenger vessel bound for St Martin’s Island caught fire at Cox’s Bazar on Saturday morning.

The fire broke out on The Atlantic Cruise around 7:00 am while the vessel was anchored at the BIWTA jetty in Nuniachhara area of Cox’s Bazar town.

Hossain Islam Bahadur, general secretary of the Sea Cruise Operator Owners‍‍` Association of Bangladesh (SCOAB), said smoke was first seen coming from inside the vessel. Within a short time, flames spread inside the ship.

Fortunately, no one was injured as there were no tourists on board at the time of the incident.

Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Tanjila Sharmin said the fire occurred while officials from the local administration were present at the jetty. 

They were monitoring tourist boarding activities as per government instructions.

After receiving the alert, a fire service unit quickly reached the spot and brought the fire under control. However, the vessel was completely damaged.

Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Cox’s Bazar, Md Shahidul Alam, said an investigation has been launched to find out the cause of the fire.
