A shooting at Mexico’s historic Teotihuacan site has left one person dead and at least 13 others injured, authorities said.

Officials said a gunman opened fire at the popular tourist destination before taking his own life. Among the victims, a Canadian woman was killed, while several foreign tourists were wounded.

Those injured include visitors from multiple countries, some suffering gunshot wounds and others hurt while trying to flee the scene.

The attack took place near the Pyramid of the Moon, a major attraction within the ancient complex located about 50 kilometers from Mexico City.

Security forces later secured the area, evacuated tourists and recovered a firearm and other items from the scene.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand described the incident as a horrific act of violence, while Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called for a full investigation.

Teotihuacan, a UNESCO-listed site known for its ancient pyramids, attracts millions of visitors each year and is considered one of Mexico’s most important tourist landmarks.

Authorities said such incidents are rare at archaeological sites, even as the country continues to face broader security challenges.

The shooting comes ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico will co-host with the United States and Canada.
