A new ceasefire in Gaza came into effect after Hamas handed over a list of three hostages to Israel, as part of the agreement.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed that the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas started on Sunday at 11:15 AM local time (9:15 AM GMT), according to reports from Al Jazeera.
Despite the ceasefire being implemented, the death toll of Palestinians in Israeli airstrikes rose to 10, as reported by Gaza’s Civil Defense spokesperson.
The spokesperson confirmed that six people died in Gaza City, three in northern Gaza, and one in Rafah, with more than 25 others injured.
On the same day the ceasefire began, Hamas, which governs Gaza, announced the release of three Israeli prisoners, as part of the agreement.
This was shared with the public through a Telegram post by a Hamas spokesperson.
However, the ceasefire did not begin at the originally scheduled time of 8:30 AM local time on Sunday, January 19.
Daniel Hagari, spokesperson for the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), confirmed that the ceasefire had not started, and Israeli forces continued their operations in Gaza.
