In a shocking revelation, Israel has admitted to being behind the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, a top leader of the Palestinian group Hamas.

On Monday, Israel‍‍`s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, publicly confirmed for the first time that the Israeli government was responsible for Haniyeh‍‍`s death, which took place in Tehran, Iran, back in July.

Reuters reports that this admission could spark further tensions between Israel and Iran, as the two countries have been long-standing regional rivals.

Katz made the announcement during a ceremony held to honor Israeli soldiers who had died in the ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza and in battles with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

He said, “At a time when the Houthi terrorist organization is firing missiles at Israel, I want to start by sending them a clear message: We have defeated Hamas, we have defeated Hezbollah, we have crippled Iran’s defense systems, we have damaged their production capabilities, we have caused the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, we have struck a powerful blow against the Axis of Evil, and we will deliver a severe blow to the Houthi terrorist organization in Yemen, who are the last ones still standing.”

Katz also stated, “Israel will target their strategic infrastructure and decapitate their leaders – as we did with Haniyeh, Sinwar, and Nasrallah in Tehran, Gaza, and Lebanon – and we will do the same in Hodeidah and Sana’a.”

The Houthis, an Iran-backed group in Yemen, have been carrying out attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea and surrounding waters for over a year, trying to enforce a naval blockade on Israel.

The Houthis claim that their actions are in support of Palestinians in Gaza.

Haniyeh, who was a key political leader of Hamas, was assassinated in a covert operation in Tehran at the end of July.

While Iran immediately blamed Israel for the killing, the Israeli government kept quiet at that time, neither confirming nor denying the involvement.

Just a few months later, Israel’s forces also killed Yahya Sinwar, who replaced Haniyeh as the new leader of Hamas in Gaza.
