Israel’s parliament has approved the national budget after a late-night session, allowing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stay in power and likely complete his government’s term until the fall.

The budget needed to be passed before April 1 to avoid automatic early elections. With the approval now secured, the government has more stability, although Netanyahu still has the option to call an election earlier if he chooses.

The vote passed 62-55 amid a tense atmosphere, with sirens warning of missile threats during the session. Lawmakers gathered in a safer area of the parliament building due to security concerns linked to the ongoing conflict with Iran.

Opposition leaders strongly criticized the budget, especially over increased funding for ultra-Orthodox communities. Opposition leader Yair Lapid described it as “the greatest theft” in the country’s history, while former prime minister Naftali Bennett called it a “nocturnal heist.”

A key point of criticism was a last-minute addition of about $250 million for ultra-Orthodox schools. Critics also raised concerns over military service, as many in the community do not serve despite national requirements.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich defended the budget, saying it supports all citizens.

The $270 billion plan is Israel’s largest budget to date and includes a major increase in defense spending, reflecting the ongoing conflict with Iran. The rise in military costs has led to cuts in other sectors.

Although many Israelis continue to support the war, recent surveys suggest the government has not gained much political support. Ongoing tensions in the region, including attacks involving Iran and Hezbollah, continue to affect both security and the economy.

With elections due by the end of October, the budget approval gives Netanyahu a better chance to remain in office through the full term, even as political pressure continues.
