More than 500 people are feared dead after two boats capsized off the coast of Myanmar, UN agencies said.
The warning was issued in a recent joint statement by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
According to the agencies, the two boats departed from Myanmar`s Rakhine State in late June. They ran into trouble while attempting to cross dangerous sea routes, leading to the deadly incidents.
Many of those reported dead or missing are believed to be members of the persecuted Rohingya community. Officials say some of the passengers are thought to have left refugee camps in Cox`s Bazar, Bangladesh, hoping to reach Malaysia or other countries in search of a better life.
The United Nations described the incidents as deeply tragic and expressed grave concern over the loss of life. It also urged the international community to take coordinated action to prevent dangerous and irregular sea journeys that continue to put vulnerable people at risk.
