Nearly 24,000 expats arrested in Saudi Arabia

Saudi authorities have detained nearly 24,000 expatriates over the past week for violating various laws in the country. 

This latest move has raised concerns over the strict enforcement of residential, border security, and labor laws.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, as reported by Arab News, a total of 23,865 illegal immigrants were arrested in the week for breaching residential laws, crossing borders illegally, and violating labor regulations. 

Of those detained, 16,644 were arrested for breaking residential laws, 3,896 for illegal border crossings, and 3,325 for labor law violations.

Additionally, 1,432 individuals were apprehended for entering Saudi Arabia without proper authorization. 

Among those arrested, 67% were Ethiopians, 29% were Yemenis, and 4% came from other countries.

The authorities also captured 97 people who were attempting to flee the country, as well as 13 others for violating transportation laws.

The Saudi Ministry of Interior has warned that those found guilty of assisting illegal immigrants, providing transportation, or offering shelter could face severe penalties. 

Offenders could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison and face a fine of 1 million Saudi Riyals. 

Authorities also noted that violators‍‍` properties and vehicles may be confiscated as part of the punishment.
