Operation Sindoor: India’s offensive named in tribute to lost husbands

India‍‍`s choice of the name ‘Operation Sindoor’ for its military campaign against Pakistan carries deep symbolic meaning rooted in cultural and emotional significance.

The term ‘Sindoor’ refers to the red vermilion powder traditionally worn by married Hindu women, symbolizing marital status and devotion.

The operation’s name appears to pay tribute to the grief of widowed women following the deadly April attack in Indian-administered Kashmir, which left many civilians dead, including husbands of several women.

A powerful image circulated widely in the aftermath — a woman lying beside the lifeless body of her husband — came to represent the sorrow and emotional toll of the massacre.

The image resonated with the public and appeared to influence the naming of the operation.

Both India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar shared the operation’s name and emblem on social media, featuring the red powder motif.
