Pakistan on Monday summoned Afghanistan’s top diplomat after blaming militants based in Afghanistan for a deadly suicide attack in the northwest of the country.

At least 15 people were killed on Saturday when a suicide bomber attacked a checkpoint in the Bannu area near the Afghan border, officials said.

Authorities said militants also opened fire on police during the assault.

Pakistan’s foreign ministry said investigations and intelligence evidence suggested the attack was planned by militants operating from Afghanistan.

Officials in Bannu said more than 100 attackers were involved and that drones and heavy weapons were used during the assault.

The attack has increased tensions between the two neighbouring countries, which have exchanged accusations over cross-border militancy in recent years.

The Taliban-led Afghan government has repeatedly denied claims that Afghan territory is being used by militants to launch attacks inside Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the United States Embassy in Islamabad expressed sympathy over the incident and said the people of Pakistan deserve peace and security.
