Marco Rubio arrived in India on Saturday ahead of next week’s Quad foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi.
The visit comes as Washington seeks to strengthen relations with India following tensions over recent US tariff measures affecting Indian exports.
Rubio began his trip in Kolkata and is expected to visit the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa.
During his four-day visit, Rubio is also scheduled to travel to Agra and Jaipur before joining high-level diplomatic meetings in the Indian capital.
According to US officials, Rubio will hold talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on issues including trade, technology, defence and regional cooperation.
He is also expected to meet Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
The Quad meeting involving India, the United States, Australia and Japan is likely to focus on security issues in the Indo-Pacific region and concerns over China’s growing military presence in disputed waters.
The Quad alliance has become a major part of Washington’s strategy in the Indo-Pacific region as geopolitical competition with China continues to grow.
