SpaceX called off the launch of its giant Starship rocket on Thursday just seconds before liftoff after technical problems interrupted the countdown.

The massive rocket was scheduled to begin a test flight from Texas that would have carried it halfway around the world.

However, engineers detected several issues at the launch site near the Mexico border, forcing the company to halt the mission less than 30 seconds before launch.

Later, Elon Musk said a hydraulic pin connected to the launch tower system failed to retract properly.

He added that another launch attempt could happen soon if the problem is fixed quickly.

The mission was expected to test the latest version of Starship and deploy 20 mock Starlink satellites before the spacecraft splashed down in the Indian Ocean.

The planned flight would have been Starship’s 12th test mission and its first since last year.

NASA is relying on the upgraded Starship system for future missions aimed at returning astronauts to the moon.
