TikTok has been shut down in the United States. Just hours before the official ban kicked in, the app was no longer working for American users, leaving many unable to access it.
BBC reported that when users in the U.S. try to open the app, they’re greeted with a message saying:
“Sorry, TikTok is no longer available. A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the United States. Unfortunately, the app is no longer accessible. However, we are fortunate that after taking office, President Donald Trump has indicated he will work with us to find a solution to reinstate TikTok. Stay tuned.”
This decision comes shortly after President Donald Trump announced a 90-day reprieve for TikTok.
In his first actions as the newly sworn-in 47th President, Trump addressed the ban and what may follow.
In an interview with NBC News on Saturday, Trump shared his plans, saying,
“I might make an announcement about this on Monday after I take office. Over the next three months, we will attempt to reach an agreement with the Chinese company. We need to manage the situation carefully.”
With over 170 million TikTok users in the U.S., the ban has come as a surprise to many.
TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance, has been under scrutiny from the U.S. government, which accuses the app of being a potential tool for Chinese espionage.
The legal battle has been ongoing, with demands for ByteDance to either change its ownership or sell TikTok`s U.S. operations.
After no resolution was reached, the U.S. Supreme Court stepped in, leading to the app`s shutdown.
