Massive wildfires burning near Jerusalem have prompted the evacuation of at least ten communities and caused significant road closures, including the main Route 1 highway linking Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, on Wednesday—Israel’s Memorial Day.
The fires, fueled by dry conditions and strong winds, continue to spread uncontrollably across multiple fronts, with flames visible alongside highways and near populated areas.
Jerusalem District Fire Commander Shmulik Friedman called it “perhaps the largest fire ever in the country” and warned that winds exceeding 60 mph are expected soon, which could worsen the situation. The origin of the fire remains unknown.
In dramatic scenes, videos showed people fleeing on foot through thick smoke and emergency workers searching for stranded individuals in abandoned vehicles. Hospitals near the fire zone, including Hadassah Medical Center, have started evacuating stable patients and urged the public to avoid non-essential visits.
Israel has requested international help, with aircraft from Italy and Macedonia expected to arrive shortly. Defense Minister Israel Katz declared a national emergency, mobilizing all available resources. About 120 firefighting teams and 12 aircraft are currently battling the flames.
Police have arrested a man from East Jerusalem suspected of attempting to ignite another fire. Items found with him included a lighter and other flammable material.
The blaze is near the same location as a fire that broke out last week, raising further concerns over fire management and preparedness.
