In an ongoing crackdown in Bagerhat, 14 more members of the Awami League have been arrested by joint security forces.
The arrests took place during a series of raids that were carried out from Saturday night into Sunday morning in various parts of the district.
With these latest detentions, the total number of Awami League and affiliated organization members arrested in the past week has now reached 91.
The people arrested are reportedly local leaders and activists from various groups within the Awami League, including Jubo League, Krishak League, Matshajibi League, and Swechasebak League.
According to Md. Shahiduzzaman, a police inspector in the media wing of the Bagerhat Police Superintendent`s office, the joint forces—comprising police, Coast Guard, and Navy personnel—have been conducting the operation to ensure the district`s law and order are maintained.
The most recent arrests are part of a larger investigation into several criminal activities, including attacks on members of the anti-discrimination student movement, vandalism, looting, extortion, and the illegal occupation of fish enclosures in Bagerhat.
These incidents reportedly followed the fall of the government on August 5 of the previous year.
The 14 arrested individuals will be taken to court later today, Sunday, and are expected to be sent to jail following court proceedings.
