A Dhaka court has sent former Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury to jail in a case over an alleged attempt to murder during the July Mass Uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana passed the order after police produced her before the court and sought a two-day remand. The defence, however, moved for bail.

According to the case statement, a procession organised by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement took place on July 18, 2024, in the Azimpur Government Staff Quarter area of Lalbagh.

At one stage, police and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated bodies allegedly opened fire on the rally, leaving several people dead and injured.

One of the victims, Asharaful, also known as Fahim, was shot and sustained pellet injuries, including severe damage to his left eye. He later lost vision in that eye despite receiving treatment at multiple hospitals.

The case was filed with Lalbagh Police Station on July 17, 2025.

Earlier, members of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested the former Speaker from her Dhanmondi residence on April 6.

Further legal proceedings in the case are expected to follow.
