Ex-traffic inspector sentenced to life imprisonment for drug offense

A Faridpur court has sentenced Sheikh Azam, a former traffic inspector, to life imprisonment in a drug-related case. Azam, 40, previously served as a traffic inspector in Jhenaidah district. Alongside the life sentence, he has been fined Tk5,000.

The verdict was delivered by Judge Shihabul Islam of the Faridpur Additional District and Sessions Judge Court, as reported by Public Prosecutor Advocate Sanowar Hossain to The Business Standard.

According to Hossain, on December 26, 2017, Azam was involved in a road accident on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Madhukhali, Faridpur. Following the accident, police discovered 82 bottles of phensedyl concealed in a box inside his motorcycle. Subsequently, a case was filed against Azam under the Narcotics Control Act.

On May 7, 2018, Police Inspector Md Mizanur Rahman of Madhukhali Police Station submitted the charge sheet to the court. Today, the court issued its verdict under Section 3(b) of Table 19(1) of the Narcotics Control Act.

In addition, the court acquitted Noor Alam, who was accompanying Azam on the motorcycle at the time of the incident.
