Former CJ Khairul Haque sent to jail after remand

Former Chief Justice A B M Khairul Haque has been sent to jail following a seven-day remand in a case filed over delivering an unlawful verdict that led to the abolition of the caretaker government system and for allegedly producing a forged judgment.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuzzaman ordered his detention in jail on Thursday after Shahbagh police presented him before the court upon completion of his remand.

The case was filed at Shahbagh Police Station on August 27 last year under Sections 219 and 466 of the Penal Code by Supreme Court lawyer Mujahidul Islam.

According to the case statement, Justice Khairul Haque allegedly acted under the influence of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and with the expectation of securing a favorable post-retirement appointment.

He is accused of altering the short verdict of May 10, 2011, and unlawfully publishing the full text of the judgment on September 16, 2012, which annulled the caretaker government provision.

Khairul Haque was arrested by Detective Branch (DB) police from his residence in Dhanmondi on July 24. On July 30, a Dhaka court granted a seven-day remand in the case.

Following the remand, police submitted a petition to keep him in jail. After the hearing, the magistrate ordered his detention.

Justice Khairul Haque served as Chief Justice from October 1, 2010, to May 17, 2011. He was later appointed Chairman of the Law Commission on July 23, 2013, for a three-year term, and his tenure was extended several times.
