HC challenges legality of Faruque’s ouster and Aminul’s appointment

The court also ordered a status quo in the BCB board‍‍`s operational activities.

The High Court of Bangladesh has issued a rule questioning the legality of the National Sports Council‍‍`s (NSC) decision to cancel  Faruque Ahmed’s nomination and appoint former national cricket captain Aminul Islam as a director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

The court also ordered a status quo in the BCB board‍‍`s operational activities.

The rule, issued by a bench of Justice Rajik Al Jalil and Justice Sathiqa Hossain on Tuesday, came following a writ petition filed by Faruque Ahmed.

The court asked why the NSC‍‍`s decisions on May 29 and 30 should not be declared beyond legal authority. The Youth and Sports Secretary, BCB, and other concerned parties have been asked to respond.

On May 29, NSC annulled  Faruque Ahmed’s nomination as a BCB director. A day later, it appointed Aminul Islam in his place. Following this, BCB’s board elected Aminul as president during a board meeting.

Senior lawyer Md. Ruhul Quddus, representing  Faruque, stated that the court’s order for maintaining the status quo means all members, including Aminul Islam, will continue in their current positions until further notice.

BCB’s lawyer Mahin M. Rahman confirmed the court‍‍`s order allows the current nine-member board, under Aminul‍‍`s leadership, to continue its functions.

Faruque initially filed the petition on Sunday, challenging the legality of the NSC‍‍`s decisions. It was presented to a High Court bench on Monday, which removed it from the cause list, allowing it to be refiled with another bench. The current bench accepted it and heard the matter on Tuesday.
