The High Court has set Sunday, 17 August, for a hearing on a writ petition seeking legal action against those responsible for illegally looting white stones from Bholaganj in Companiganj upazila of Sylhet.
The date was fixed on Thursday (14 August) by the High Court bench of Justice Fahmida Kader and Justice Syed Zahid Mansur. Advocate Mir AKM Nurun Nabi, who filed the writ petition, presented it before the court for hearing.
The petition calls for the authorities to take appropriate measures against the perpetrators and deploy additional law enforcement personnel in the area to prevent further illegal extraction.
It also seeks a rule asking why the inaction of relevant government officials in preventing the looting from the tourist site of Bholaganj should not be declared illegal.
Over the past year, a large amount of stone has reportedly been extracted illegally from Companiganj and Gowainghat upazilas in Sylhet.
Various quarters have alleged that the stones were taken in broad daylight in full view of the local administration, which failed to take any effective action.
