The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Baharul Alam, has announced that starting today, three specialized police units will be hitting the streets to curb rising robbery incidents in the country.

Speaking at a workshop in Rajshahi on Monday, where the focus was on law enforcement with an emphasis on human rights and environmental concerns, the IGP acknowledged the growing crime rates.

"The number of crimes has increased, especially robberies that take place at night, and even during the day. We have taken notice of this issue," he said.

The new initiative, involving the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Anti-Terrorism Unit, and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), will see these units working together on a patrol program.

“We are implementing this starting today, and we hope to see improvements. If it doesn’t work, we will have to think of other strategies,” he added.

When asked about the possible involvement of political parties in the current chaos, the IGP responded by sharing an update on a recent arrest by RAB: "Yesterday, RAB arrested a robber from his hideout. Along with a machete and knife, they found a bundle of 600,000 taka. We are investigating, and we will know more after that."

The IGP‍‍`s remarks suggest a strong commitment to tackling the increase in crime and ensuring better security in the coming days.
