The Supreme Court`s Appellate Division has set a new date for the hearing on the review petition filed by Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam, who faces a death sentence for crimes against humanity.
Initially, the hearing was scheduled for February 20 but didn’t take place as planned.
This Sunday morning, a bench headed by Justice Md. Ashfaqul Islam rescheduled the hearing for Tuesday, February 25, following a request from Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman and Chief Prosecutor Tazul Islam.
They had urged the court to expedite the process for Azhar`s review hearing.
The hearing is expected to draw attention, particularly after remarks made by Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman.
At a public rally in Lakshmipur on Saturday, February 22, Rahman demanded the release of ATM Azharul Islam by February 25.
He warned the interim government that if Azhar was not freed, they should prepare to imprison three million Jamaat activists and leaders.
This bold statement has stirred political discussions across the country.
Dr. Rahman’s demands follow his previous declaration of voluntarily surrendering himself if Azhar was not granted bail.
On February 20, he posted a statement on social media regarding his readiness to accept this consequence.
ATM Azharul Islam originally filed his review petition on July 19, 2020, after the Appellate Division upheld his death sentence on October 23, 2019.
The decision was led by the then-Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain. After this ruling, Azhar submitted his plea for reconsideration.
With this latest development, all eyes are on the upcoming hearing as it could be a crucial moment for both Azhar and the wider political landscape in Bangladesh.
