BNP demands fresh SC Bar Association polls

The BNP said on Friday that the Awami League had held a lopsided election for the Supreme Court Bar Association using the police and outsiders, putting the final nail in the coffin of the country's electoral system.

The party also sought a re-election to the Supreme Court Bar Association dismissing the results of the "violence-marred polls" for the sake of the sanctity of the apex court of the country.

The Awami League has become such a politically bankrupt organization that it is forced to employ the police and impartial third parties to declare its candidates the winners of the Supreme Court Bar Association election. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the secretary general of the BNP said this, adding that "It is a matter of grave shame."

Fakhrul stated that under these conditions, his party asks the chief justice to step forward and take the required actions to preserve the honor of the Supreme Court, the highest institution of the legal system.

He made the demand at a press conference held at the BNP's Naya Paltan Central office the day after the results of the Supreme Court Bar Association polls were announced.

At the elections held on Wednesday and Thursday, the pro-ruling party Bangabandhu Awami Ainjibi Parishad gained all 14 positions on the executive committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association.
