Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has decided to construct another ferry terminal at Sattar Madbar-Mongol Majhi ghat of Zazira point in Shariatpur and Shimulia of Munshiganj respectively in a bid to ease the Eid travel.
BIWTA Chairman Golam Sadek came up with the announcement while visiting the ghat on Monday. The authorities have decided to start ferry movement at this terminal from 28 April, he said.
Besides, decision has been taken to operate nighttime ferries at Banglabazar and Shimulia ghats of Madaripur and Munshiganj. Only three ferries are now operative on this route from 7am till 5pm considering the safety of under-construction Padma Bridge. Ferry movement at Sattar Madbar-Mongol Majhi started December last year as an alternative route.
Authorities decided to create an alternative route after several ferries hit the Padma Bridge’s pillar repeatedly last year, BIWTA and BIWTC sources said.
The BIWTA and BIWTC built a separate ferry terminal at Sattar-Madbar-Mongol Majhi ghat on 25 August last year. Ferry movement started on the route from 8 December.
