Chattogram-8 by-elections start with few voters present

A sparse crowd of voters began casting their ballots in the Chattogram-8 by-polls this morning on Thursday (April 27, 2023) as voting began at 8:30am. It would continue till 4pm.

Delwar Hossain, the polling officer at Gomdandi Government Model High School, reported that a total of 70 voters cast their ballots there until 9:50am. He also noted that there are 2,720 registered voters at the polling place, according to media reports. 

He said, "Voting is proceeding peacefully."

Awami League candidate Noman Al Mahmud voted at Ekhlasur Rahman Primary School. He added that peaceful voting was taking place.

A total of 22 executive magistrates are on duty and working to prevent any undesirable incidents.

Voting is taking place at 190 polling places, according to Md Hasanuzzaman, the returning officer for this by-election. This constituency has 5,17,652 voters in total.

Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are being used to conduct elections. The constituency remains vacant after the demise of AL candidate Moslem Uddin Ahmed on February 5.

The five candidates competing for this seat are - Awami League's Noman Al Mahmud with boat symbol, Islamic Front Bangladesh's Syed Muhammad Farid Uddin with chair symbol, Bangladesh Islamic Front's Sehab Uddin Muhammad Abdus Samad with candle symbol, National People's Party-NPP's Kamal Pasha with mango symbol and independent candidate Ramzan Ali with ektara symbol.

BNP, one of the largest parties in the country, did not field a candidate in the by-election. With eight months left for the national elections, there is no heat in this by-election.
