In a shocking case from Fulbaria, Mymensingh, a man named Solaiman Hossain Selim—very much alive—was falsely declared "martyred" during last year’s anti-discrimination students protests by none other than his own brother, Golam Mostafa, also known locally as "Mostu Dakat." The incident, tied to a long-running family dispute, has sparked public outrage.
According to police and local sources, Mostafa filed a murder case with Jatrabari Police Station on August 30, 2023, naming 41 individuals including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Awami Leage politician Obaidul Quader.
The case falsely claims that Selim was shot and killed during an anti-discrimination student movement near Kazla Petrol Pump in Dhaka on August 3.
The irony: Selim, 50, is alive and runs a grocery store in Beltoli Bazar, Fulbaria. His two brothers, Helal Uddin and Abul Hossain, were listed as witnesses in the case. The alleged motive behind this fabrication stems from a family land feud. Selim, who has only daughters, is being pressured by his brothers to relinquish his share of inherited land.
"Mostu is a known criminal with a history of murder cases. He hasn’t returned home in 15 years but is using my other brothers to seize my property. This false case was a way to eliminate me legally," said Selim. “I’ve been to the Jatrabari police and detective branch five times just to prove I’m alive. It’s unbelievable.”
Selim’s wife, Hazera Khatun, also accused her husband’s brothers of previous attacks and said they staged the death claim to eventually kill him and claim his property.
Neighbors like Ruhul Amin described Selim as peaceful and hardworking, adding, “He left his parental home to avoid conflicts. But this conspiracy to label him dead is unacceptable. Those responsible must be punished.”
Fulbaria police confirmed the property dispute was the root of the issue. Officer-in-Charge Rukunuzzaman stated that Mostafa, who has been implicated in multiple serious cases, likely orchestrated the false case for personal gain.
As news of the incident spread, Mostafa went into hiding. Detective Sub-Inspector Aminul Islam, who is now the third investigator assigned to the case, said, “Selim is alive, and we’re preparing for a DNA test in court. One suspect has already been arrested, and we’re working to close the investigation swiftly. The phone number Mostafa provided is unreachable, and he remains at large.”
The bizarre case underscores how deep-rooted family disputes can spiral into criminal conspiracies, even involving manipulation of the justice system.
