Sarjis Alam, the Chief Organiser of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, has revealed that during his time as a student at Dhaka University, he was pressured into engaging in politics related to the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).
He shared these details at the "Concert for Youth" event, which was held at Panchagarh Stadium by the District Anti-Discrimination Students` Movement.
Speaking alongside student leaders from both Panchagarh and Dhaka University who have been part of the ongoing anti-discrimination movement, Sarjis explained,
“We all share a unique experience—we were all residential students at Dhaka University. While staying at the university’s hostels, we were forced to join politics tied to the BCL.”
Sarjis went on to explain,
"Whenever we had the chance, we broke free from those pressures and stood firm. From July 1 to 15, we fought on the streets of Dhaka University and Shahbagh. My fellow activists here refused to obey the BCL hall presidents and secretaries, and we came to Shahbagh every day, under a separate banner."
He didn’t hold back in criticizing misinformation and the ruling Awami League, stating,
“The `gujob league` (rumor-mongering league) will continue spreading lies. After stealing billions, they can no longer face the people. Now, they rely on propaganda, given from behind barbed-wire fences. We won’t tolerate their leader, Sheikh Hasina, or her children any longer in Bangladesh.”
Sarjis wrapped up his speech by stressing the importance of unity for the future of Panchagarh.
"If we can unite the youth and put the district’s development above our personal or political interests, Panchagarh—currently one of the most underdeveloped areas—can be turned into one of the most progressive places in Bangladesh," he said.
