A court has ordered a travel ban on Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, the former mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation, and his wife, Afrin Taposh.
The order was given on Tuesday by Senior Special Judge Mohammad Zakir Hossain in Dhaka.
The news was confirmed by Aminul Islam, an Assistant Director at the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
According to sources at the ACC and the court, the travel ban was requested by the ACC’s Deputy Director, Monirul Islam.
The ACC is investigating allegations of corruption and the illegal use of public funds by Sheikh Taposh and others.
The commission claims that they have been involved in stealing large amounts of money from the city corporation.
The court issued the travel restriction after reviewing the ACC`s request.
The ACC has been looking into corruption cases involving Sheikh Taposh and his family members for some time.
In fact, on October 24, the ACC summoned Sheikh Taposh and his family to appear for questioning at their office in Segunbagicha, Dhaka.
The commission suspects that Taposh earned illegal wealth during his time as mayor through dishonest means.
The timing of this issue became more complicated when it was discovered that Sheikh Taposh and his family left the country on August 3, just before the current government lost power.
He traveled to Singapore, while his family flew to London.
This raised concerns as the departure came just as the ACC was starting its investigation into the former mayor’s finances.
This case is part of a larger investigation into corruption within local government, and the ACC is trying to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
The court`s decision to stop Taposh and his wife from leaving the country is seen as an important step in the ongoing investigation.
