Veteran politician and presidium member of Bangladesh Awami League, Begum Matia Chowdhury, passed away on Wednesday at 1 PM while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital. The hospital authorities have confirmed her death, and her uncle, Mostafa Jamal Haider, also shared the news with the media.
Matia Chowdhury began her political career through leftist student politics before joining the National Awami Party (NAP) and later the Awami League. Known for her fiery speeches during various mass movements, she was often referred to as the "Firebrand" due to her passionate oratory.
In recognition of her significant contributions during the Bangladesh Liberation War, she was awarded an honorary fellowship by Bangla Academy in 2021. Chowdhury was elected six times as a Member of Parliament from the Sherpur-2 constituency and served multiple terms as the Minister of Agriculture under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina`s government. Her tenure is credited with remarkable advancements in Bangladesh`s agricultural sector, according to relevant stakeholders.
