Badhon on Mitford killing: Are we living in hell?

Actor Azmeri Haque Badhon is chanting slogan during the July protest, 2024.

Popular actor Azmeri Haque Badhon has expressed deep shock and anger over the brutal public murder of scrap trader Lal Chand Sohag in front of Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka.

Taking to social media platforms Facebook and Instagram, Badhon shared a series of emotional posts, saying that the video footage and images of the incident have left her devastated.

“My parents are extremely worried about my safety,” she wrote. “And my daughter—she only has me. I am her entire world. But how do I keep her safe in a country like this? What kind of place are we living in? There is no security here, no peace of mind.”

Referring to the brutal footage that circulated online, Badhon said, “A man was beaten to death in broad daylight, and people just stood there and watched. How is this even possible? People saw it happening and did nothing. That is the scariest part.”

In one of her posts, Badhon lamented the state of governance and public safety, writing, “We had hoped that things would change. We dreamed of a better, safer future. A new government came to power—we believed in them, we waited. But what we’re seeing now is terrifying. If an elected government doesn’t have the courage to bring change, to offer a future, then what is the point?”

She continued, “I am scared. I am angry. But more than anything, I am heartbroken.”

Badhon also questioned her own safety, writing, “Am I even safe in this country? Do I have the right to speak my mind? Or will I become the next target just for telling the truth?”

The disturbing murder took place on a busy street in front of Sir Salimullah Medical College (Mitford Hospital), where Sohag was attacked with bricks and stones, his head and body crushed, and ultimately stripped and killed by a mob.

Investigations and witness accounts suggest the murder stemmed from disputes over extortion. Lal Chand Sohag was reportedly once affiliated with the opposition youth wing, Jubo Dal. Initial findings indicate that members of Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal, and Swechchhasebak Dal may have been involved in the killing.

Badhon’s posts have sparked widespread conversations online, with many expressing similar fears and frustrations about lawlessness and impunity in the country.
