Christopher Nolan is one of the most distinctive names among Hollywood filmmakers. His films have consistently offered audiences new experiences, thought-provoking worlds, and innovative storytelling. Alongside box office success, several of his works have earned widespread critical acclaim.
From the complex world of dreams and the mysteries of time to the vastness of outer space, the Oscar-winning British filmmaker has brought extraordinary concepts to the big screen with remarkable skill. Now, the wait is over for fans as his latest film, ‘The Odyssey,’ is set to arrive. The film will be released worldwide on July 17 and will also hit screens at Star Cineplex in Bangladesh on the same day.
Based on the nearly 3,000-year-old Greek epic poem ‘The Odyssey’ by poet Homer, the big-budget film tells the story of Greek hero Odysseus and his long, perilous journey home.
After spending a decade fighting in the Trojan War, Odysseus faces countless challenges on his way back to his homeland. The epic follows his struggle to return to his kingdom of Ithaca after nearly 20 years, as he battles dangerous seas, unknown islands, mythical creatures, and the wrath of gods and goddesses.
In the film, Matt Damon plays Odysseus, while Tom Holland portrays his son Telemachus and Anne Hathaway plays his wife Penelope. The star-studded cast also includes Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Mia Goth, Benny Safdie, and Jon Bernthal.
Nolan, the director behind acclaimed films such as ‘The Dark Knight’ trilogy, ‘Inception,’ ‘Interstellar,’ and ‘Oppenheimer,’ has said that the defining feature of ‘The Odyssey’ is its enormous scale.
“Every film comes with its own challenges. But with this one, it felt like new challenges were waiting at every stage,” Nolan said.
He added that ‘The Odyssey’ is the biggest, most challenging, and most ambitious project of his career. He also acknowledged that adapting Homer’s timeless epic for the screen was no easy task.
The film was shot across multiple locations, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, and Iceland. Extensive planning and preparation went into creating its battle sequences, massive sets, and action scenes.
Tom Holland, who plays Telemachus, recalled his experience on the first day of filming, saying that arriving at the Moroccan set felt like stepping thousands of years back in time. He was amazed by the vast sand dunes, thousands of performers, rows of soldiers, hundreds of boats along the coastline, and preparations for battle. “It felt like I had arrived not on a film set, but in a chapter of history,” he said.
Matt Damon, who plays Odysseus, said that despite his long career in Hollywood, he had rarely witnessed a production of such scale. Describing the filming of the fall of Troy, he said the burning buildings, thousands of extras portraying soldiers, and the massive setup made the set feel like a real battlefield.
Technically, ‘The Odyssey’ also marks a new chapter in Nolan’s filmmaking career. It is his first feature film to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras. Nolan’s goal is to provide audiences with the most immersive and realistic cinematic experience possible.
Overall, ‘The Odyssey’ is expected to become another major milestone in Nolan’s filmmaking journey, with audiences around the world eagerly awaiting its release.
