Fakir Alamgir taken to Shaheed Minar, Burial at Khilgaon

The mortal remains of Bangladeshi folk legend Fakir Alamgir have been taken to capital’s Central Shaheed Minar on Saturday (July 24) afternoon. People from all walks of life came to pay homage to the folk music legend, who had a major role in the Liberation War of 1971 at Shadhin Bangla Betar Kendra.

His coffin was kept there for an hour after 12 pm Saturday, his son Mashuk Alamgir told the press.

Alamgir’s fans and well-wishers could not flock in large numbers due to the excessive rainfall earlier and Covid-19 restrictions.

Earlier that morning, the eminent musician received a state guard of honour at Pallima Sangsad in Khilgaon for his contributions as a freedom fighter.

His first namaz-e-janaza (funeral prayer) was also held at the Pallima Sangsad. The second one will be held at the Khilgaon Matir Masjid (Mosque) after the Asr prayers on Saturday.

Family sources have confirmed, Fakir will be laid to rest at the Khilgaon Taltala Cemetery, later in the day.

Alamgir, 71, breathed his last at capital’s United Hospital around 10:57 pm on Friday (July 23) due to COVID-19 complications.

He was fully vaccinated against the disease yet got diagnosed with a respiratory illness on July 14. He had to be hospitalised the following day due to breathing issues.

Bangladesh President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have already paid their tribute to Alamgir.

They remembered the role he played in strengthening patriotism and the Liberation War spirit among the youth through his songs during 1971. Hamid and Hasina also extended their sympathy to his family and loved ones and also prayed for his belated soul.
