Aminul says he is ready to join BCB amid leadership change rumors

Aminul Islam, former captain of the Bangladesh national cricket team and the country‍‍`s first Test centurion, has expressed his readiness to take on any responsibility within the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

Although he has not received any formal request to become the board president, he confirmed that the government has shown interest in involving him in Bangladesh cricket in some capacity.

It has been learned that the current BCB President Faruq Ahmed met with the Sports Adviser to the government recently, where he was informed that the government is considering a change at the top level of the board.

Faruq has reportedly asked for a few days to make a decision regarding his resignation. However, if he does not step down voluntarily, it may be difficult for the government to replace him due to strict International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations against governmental interference in cricket boards.

In light of these developments, Aminul appears to be the most likely candidate to take on the BCB presidency in an interim capacity.

He stated that while he was not present at the recent meeting between the board president and the sports adviser, discussions about his involvement in Bangladesh cricket took place 10–15 days ago.

According to him, he was approached about taking on a role for a limited period, and he agreed to contribute in that capacity.

There had been rumors suggesting that Aminul was offered the role of BCB’s Chief Executive Officer, but he dismissed those as baseless, clarifying that no such conversation or financial negotiation ever took place.

Plans are reportedly underway to appoint him as a board director representing the National Sports Council (NSC), after which he would be elected as BCB president by the directors’ vote—serving until the next BCB election in October.

Aminul does not intend to participate in the election and has made it clear that his involvement would be temporary.

Currently serving as the Development Manager for the Asia region at the ICC, Aminul also oversees the ICC’s high-performance and training education programs.

Although his existing contract with the ICC ends next month, he confirmed that a one-year extension has been agreed upon in principle.

He has informed the ICC of his temporary assignment with the BCB, and they have approved it, assuring him that a role would be kept open should he wish to return after completing his duties in Bangladesh.

While he doesn’t plan to stay at the BCB for an extended period, Aminul said he is willing to serve the nation when needed. “When a country needs a soldier, that soldier doesn’t ask about compensation or personal interest. The mission comes first,” he said. “That’s how I see this. I’m ready to take on any responsibility for BCB. Let’s see what happens.”
