In another thrilling World Cup encounter, the Morocco national football team defeated the Netherlands national football team 3–2 in a penalty shootout to secure a place in the Round of 16.
After 90 minutes and extra time, the match ended 1–1, forcing a dramatic shootout to decide the winner.
The Netherlands made a strong start in the penalties, with Teun Koopmeiners converting their opening attempt. However, Morocco were immediately under pressure when their first taker, Neil El Aynaoui, struck the crossbar.
Tension swung back and forth as Justin Kluivert hit the post with his effort, allowing Morocco’s Sofiane Rahimi to bring the score level. Even though Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen got a hand to the shot, it still went in.
Vout Weghorst then scored for the Netherlands, before Talbi successfully converted for Morocco. The advantage shifted again when Jurriën Timber missed his attempt.
Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi then struck the post with his penalty, keeping the shootout finely balanced.
The Netherlands had a chance to regain control, but Xavi Simons’ effort was brilliantly saved by Morocco’s goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. In the decisive moment, Ismael Saibari stepped up and calmly converted to seal a 3–2 shootout victory for Morocco.
Earlier, the Netherlands had taken the lead in the 72nd minute through a goal from Cody Gakpo. However, Morocco equalised in stoppage time through Ilias Diop, forcing extra time after a 1–1 draw. With no further goals in extra time, the match was settled by penalties, where Morocco held their nerve to advance.
