12 closed jute mills will leased to private sector

Twenty-five government jute mills with continuous losses were shut down on July 1 last year. After that, it was planned to start the jute mills by leasing them to a private company. That too has not been completed in the last 13 months. As a result, not a single jute mill was started. But soon there are plans to give 12 jute mills to the private sector.

12 institutions will be leased to the private sector

Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) claims that the process of leasing 12 closed jute mills to the private sector has reached a stage. So far, 29 proposals from several local and foreign companies have been sent to the Ministry of Textiles and Jute. Once approved, the final process of leasing will begin.

It is learned that BJMC called for international tenders in the last week of April to lease 16 jute mills in the first phase. These are Hafiz Jute Mills, Gul Ahmed Jute Mills, KFD Jute Mills, MM Jute Mills, RR Jute Mills in Chittagong region; Dhaka Region UMC Jute Mills, Bangladesh Jute Mills, Rajshahi Jute Mills, Jatiya Jute Mills and Khulna Region Platinum Jubilee Jute Mills, Crescent Jute Mills, Eastern Jute Mills, Khalishpur Jute Mills, Daulatpur Jute Mills, Star Jute Mills, Jessore Jute Mills Jute Mills.

24 organizations showed interest

After inviting international tenders, 24 local and foreign companies have expressed interest in leasing 14 jute mills. The companies submitted 59 preliminary proposals separately. At that time there was no proposal to lease Khalishpur, Platinum and Star Jute Mills in Khulna region. After scrutinizing the preliminary proposals, BJMC made a list of 48. The company had set a deadline of August 31 to send the final plans to the companies that made the proposals.

In the end, 29 final plans came to lease 12 jute mills. This time no organization has shown interest in taking MM of Chittagong and UMC Jute Mills of Narsingdi. Of the 29 final plans, four jute mills, including India's Mohan Jute and Pacific Jute Mills, have applied for leases. These are Jessore Jute Industries, Eastern Jute Mills, Carpeting Jute Mills and Daulatpur Jute Mills. And the National Jute Mills of Sirajganj wants the Jute Republic of the United Kingdom.

BJMC officials said the evaluation committee ranked the proposals by seven points. Then it was sent to the ministry.
