13th parliament’s first session likely in mid-March: Salahuddin Ahmed

The maiden session of the 13th National Parliament is expected to begin around mid-March, Home Minister and BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said on Saturday night.

Speaking to reporters, he said the opening sitting is likely to be held on March 12, though it could start one or two days earlier. He added that the Speaker and Deputy Speaker will be elected during the first session.

According to Salahuddin, the session will also take up ordinances issued during the interim government’s tenure, which will be placed before the House for approval. An obituary motion is also expected to be tabled.

Members of the 13th parliament were sworn in on February 17 by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin. Following the oath, the BNP Parliamentary Party unanimously chose Tarique Rahman as Leader of the House.

On the opposition benches, Shafiqur Rahman, Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has been selected as Leader of the Opposition.

The 13th parliamentary election was held on February 12. Out of 300 seats, results in two constituencies have been suspended by court orders, while polling in one seat was cancelled after the death of a candidate.

Among the 297 declared seats, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party won 209. Jamaat-e-Islami secured 68 seats, the National Citizen Party won six, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish two, and Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Gano Odhikar Parishad, Bangladesh Jatiya Party, Ganosamhati Andolon and Khelafat Majlish won one seat each. Independent candidates claimed seven seats.

Parliamentary officials said preparations are underway for the first session, which will formally launch the legislative work of the new House.
