In a recent operation, Indian authorities have arrested 17 Bangladeshi nationals in Maharashtra, a state in western India.
They were accused of illegally entering the country and living there without proper documents.
According to a report by India Today on Thursday, December 26, Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) carried out the arrests in collaboration with local police forces.
Among those detained were 14 men and three women, all of whom were allegedly residing in India without legal permission.
Citing an official source, the Indian news agency PTI reported that the ATS, with the help of local law enforcement, conducted raids this week across the cities of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Nashik. During these raids, a total of 17 Bangladeshis were arrested for entering the country without permission and for staying there without valid documents.
The investigation also revealed that the arrested individuals had been using fake identification, including forged Aadhaar cards and PAN cards, to remain in the country.
The ATS has registered at least 10 cases against them under the Foreigners Act and other relevant laws.
This incident highlights the growing concern over illegal immigration and the use of counterfeit documents to bypass the system.
