Road Safety Foundation, in its most recent statistics said there were 516 fatalities and 812 injuries in 559 traffic incidents across Bangladesh in June of this year.
According to the study made public on Wednesday, 169 persons (33.75% of all fatalities) were killed in 207 motorbike accidents across the country. As many as 114 children and 78 women were among the deceased.
Nine incidents on waterways resulted in nine fatalities and seven missing persons, whilst 21 railway accidents during the same time period resulted in at least 18 fatalities and eleven injuries. During this time, at least 38 sacrificed animals died in mishaps.
The organization compiled the data using articles from electronic media, seven online news sources, and nine national dailies.
As many as 99 pedestrians, or 19.18% of all fatalities, were killed in traffic accidents. A total of 76 drivers and their aides perished, or 14.72% of all fatalities.
According to RSF`s observation and research, the majority of the accidents—247 (44.18%)—took place on regional roads, followed by national highways—182 (32.55%), rural roads—59 (10.55%), and urban roads—3 (0.53%).
On the other hand, the majority of accidents—268 (47.94%)—were caused by drivers losing control of the wheel, followed by 109 (19.49%) by collisions, 97 (17.35%) by pedestrians being run over, 72 (12.88%) by hitting the rear of other vehicles, and 13 (2.32%) by other causes.
