A man named Akash Mondal has been arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in connection with the brutal killings of seven people aboard a fertilizer-carrying ship, MV Al-Bakhera, in the Ishanbala area of Haimchar upazila, Chandpur.
The arrest was made on Wednesday morning, December 25, in Chitalmari, Bagerhat.
The case was initially filed on Tuesday, December 24, at Haimchar police station by Md. Mahbub Morshed, acting on behalf of the launch owners.
The complaint accused eight to ten unidentified individuals of committing murder and robbery.
The shocking discovery of the bodies was made on Monday, December 23, around 3 PM, when the river police found them aboard the MV Al-Bakhera, which was anchored at the mouth of the Ishanbala Canal on the Meghna River in Haimchar, Chandpur.
The victims were identified as Gholam Kibria, 65, the ship’s master, from Joyaer Upazila, Faridpur; Sheikh Shobuj, 35, a sailor and nephew of the master; Aminul Munshi, 40, the helmsman from Lohagora, Narail; Majedul Islam, 17, a sailor from Mohammadpur, Magura; Sajibul Islam, 26, another sailor from the same area in Magura; Salauddin Molla, 40, the ship’s engine operator from Lohagora, Narail; and Rana, 20, the cook from Srinagar, Munshiganj.
Witnesses and police reports say that the bodies were found in the rooms where the crew members had been sleeping.
It is believed that they were attacked while asleep, using sharp weapons.
Some of the victims had severe head wounds, others had their throats cut, and there were injuries on other parts of their bodies as well.
