August 5 declared national day and public holiday

The anniversary of last year’s mass uprising that led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government will now be officially observed as the Student-Public Uprising Day.

The government has decided to commemorate August 5 as a National Day and Public Holiday, to be observed every year.

The decision was made on Thursday during a special meeting of the Advisory Council, presided over by Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

The announcement was confirmed at a press conference held at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.

Cultural Affairs Advisor Mostofa Sarwar Farooki stated that the day has been declared a public holiday to honor the student-led and public movement that marked a historic turning point in the nation’s political landscape.

In addition, various commemorative events and programs will take place across the country from July 1 to August 5 as part of the first anniversary celebrations of the mass uprising.

Chief Advisor‍‍`s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumdar, and Senior Assistant Press Secretary Foyez Ahmed were also present at the press conference.
