The Dhaka Metropolitan Court has ordered the freezing of 31 bank accounts and the seizure of 43 acres of land, along with a flat, owned by Obaidul Karim, the chairman of Orion Group, and his family members.

This action follows serious corruption allegations against him and his family.

The court’s decision came on Monday after two separate petitions were filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib passed the ruling, confirming the seizure of these assets.

The ACC’s public relations officer, Aktarul Islam, verified the court’s action.

The 31 bank accounts in question, held by Obaidul Karim and his family, contain a combined total of Taka 20,26,80,658 and 6,575 US dollars.

Additionally, 43 acres and 25.45 decimals of land—valued at Taka 2,90,91,000—have been seized, along with a flat worth Taka 95,90,000.

These properties are now under the court’s control.

The Anti-Corruption Commission, represented by its Deputy Director, Rashedul Islam, filed the petition requesting the freezing and seizure of these assets.

The petition emphasized that the family of Obaidul Karim had been attempting to sell or transfer these properties.

If allowed to proceed, it could complicate the process of recovering these assets after a possible guilty verdict in the ongoing corruption case.

The court’s ruling ensures that the properties will be secured during the investigation and until the case reaches its conclusion, safeguarding the government‍‍`s ability to confiscate them if the charges are proven to be true.

This latest development marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to combat corruption in Bangladesh.
