After almost 12 days of blocking to contain violence centering quota movement, all closed social media platforms, including Facebook will be restored by Wednesday (July 31) afternoon, State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology ministry Zunaid Ahmed Palak announced.
YouTube, WhatsApp and TikTok are also included in the list.
State Minister Palak stated that Facebook is being restored as we received an apology.
He made this announcement at the BTRC building in Agargaon on Wednesday (July 31).
Palak mentioned, “We have imposed temporary restrictions on social media platforms for a short period. Considering the overall situation there is no obstruction on the operation of Facebook (Meta), TikTok, or YouTube. We have given instructions, and we expect all platforms to be fully operational today.”
Concerned authorities are trying to fix the low internet speed, said sources.
Today is also the deadline for explaining the government`s letter to Meta, YouTube, and TikTok regarding not following government`s instruction during quota movement.
The letter summons representatives from these platforms to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to provide an explanation in person.
Following violence and conflict during the job quota movement, a curfew was imposed nationwide from July 19, and the army was deployed.
The government declared a general holiday from July 21 to 23 followed by two weekly holidays.
The situation began to stabilize from July 22, leading to a gradual relaxation of the curfew and a phased reopening of offices.
