In a historic first, the Padma Bridge saw its maiden train service as the "Jahanabad Express" crossed the bridge, marking a significant milestone for rail travel in Bangladesh.
The train, which carried 553 passengers, departed from Khulna at 6 AM on Tuesday, December 24, and arrived at Kamalapur Railway Station in Dhaka at 10:45 AM.
The service will return later tonight, departing from Dhaka at 8 PM and is expected to reach Khulna by 11:45 PM.
The new service was launched under the guidance of Muhammad Fawzul Kabir Khan, an advisor to the Ministry of Railways, who officiated the inauguration.
In a press briefing, he shared his thoughts on the importance of this development, stating, "With the Padma Rail Bridge now in use, we’ve established a much faster connection between Khulna and Dhaka. The journey will now take just under four hours."
Fawzul Kabir Khan also emphasized the cost-effectiveness of traveling by train, noting, "Rail travel is a very economical way to move between cities. But, we are not without challenges, and I understand that many of you have expressed concerns about the services."
"It’s important to know why the railway can`t always meet the expectations you have. We face a shortage of locomotives, a lack of coaches, and insufficient manpower. Despite these issues, our railway workers are managing huge responsibilities with limited resources. They truly are the unsung heroes of our railway system," he explained.
This new train route across the Padma Bridge is expected to provide faster, more efficient travel for thousands of people moving between Khulna and Dhaka.
