In a recent speech to the nation, Chief Adviser Prof. Dr. Mohammad Younus of the Bangladesh Interim Government provided a detailed update on the first 100 days of his administration.
He spoke about the country`s ongoing political reforms, economic progress, and the government`s plans for a brighter future.
Dr. Younus emphasized his commitment to continuing efforts for economic growth, good governance in Bangladesh.
At the end of his speech, Dr. Younus warned the nation about the attempts of the opposition to destabilize the government.
"There is a big plan going on around the world and in every place to make this government fail. One of their big goals is to divide us... Don’t let them succeed. If they succeed, it will mean the end of our country."
Economic Progress and Challenges
Dr. Younus then turned to the state of the economy.
He said the country was in a bad economic situation when the interim government took over. However, in just 100 days, things have started to improve.
He shared the good news about the garment industry, which had faced problems due to unpaid wages and benefits.
Many workers protested, but the government successfully negotiated an agreement between workers and factory owners.
As a result, workers returned to their jobs and the industry is recovering.
"We are happy to say that a big agreement has been signed between the factory owners and the workers, covering 18 points. We have solved the workers’ issues without any big violence, and now they are back to work. This has helped bring life back to Bangladesh’s export industry."
Exports grew by 21% in October, showing that Bangladesh`s economy is bouncing back. Dr. Younus also reported that the government has managed to pay off nearly $2 billion in foreign loans without using the country`s reserves.
The government has also reduced its debt for fuel imports from $478 million to $160 million.
"We have paid back nearly $2 billion in foreign loans without touching our reserves. We have also reduced the amount we owed for fuel imports from $478 million to $160 million."
Despite these positive changes, Dr. Younus acknowledged that there is still a tax shortfall.
The government has managed to increase tax collection by 9% between July and October, but there is still a gap in meeting this year’s tax goals.
He urged citizens to file their taxes online to help improve the process.
