Dr. Asif Nazrul, the Adviser to the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, has made an important announcement, assuring that the trial for the July genocide will be wrapped up before the Victory Day this year.
He shared this at a national dialogue on reforms held on Saturday, December 28, at the Krishibid Institute in the capital.
The discussion, which focuses on issues like enforced disappearances and the July-August genocide, is taking place on the second day of a two-day event.
Asif Nazrul stated that the Law Ministry will be handling all aspects of the trial, and there will be no room for carelessness. He said, "All the trials will be managed by the law department. There will be no negligence. We will ask questions like why figures such as Hasan Mahmud and Obaidul Quader fled, and the home adviser will have to answer for this."
He also mentioned, “As soon as Sheikh Hasina fled, public prosecutors also disappeared. Prosecutors from 51 districts have sent information about false cases.”
The event kicked off with leaders from the anti-discrimination movement calling for justice for all the killings and enforced disappearances that have occurred in the country over the last 16 years, including the tragic BDR killings.
The General Secretary of the Islami Chhatra Shibir pointed out that the disappearances of two students from the Islamic University marked the start of a culture of enforced disappearances under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina.
Representatives from Jamaat also raised concerns, pointing out that the interim government has not yet started the trials for the enforced disappearances.
The second session of the dialogue is set to start at 2:30 PM, where speakers will address the responsibilities for reforms and outline a roadmap for elections.
The final session, which will focus on the country’s security and its interests in light of the current geopolitical situation, is scheduled to begin at 4:45 PM.
