Sheikh Hasina faces five more murder cases

Ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina has been sued separately in at least five cases in the capital, Rangpur, Joypurhat and Natore over the killings of six students during the Anti-Discrimination Students‍‍` Movement that toppled her government.

Meanwhile,  a case was filed today against the former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 12 others over murder of two students in capital‍‍`s Sutrapur area during the recent anti-discrimination students‍‍` movement.

The 12 other accused are: former road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Mohammad Hasan Mahmud, Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, former inspector general of police (IGP) Abdullah Al Mamun, Syed Nurul Islam, Harun Ur Rashid, Biplob Kumar and Habibur Rahman.

Another 200-250 unnamed people, including leaders and activists of Awami League and its front organizations, were made accused in the case.

One Nasrin Begum filed the case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Torikul Islam over the killing of Kobi Nazrul Govt College student Ikram Hossain Kawser and Shaheed Suhrawardi College student Omar Faruk.

The two students were gunned down in separate incidents by police and Awami League goons as they were staging protests along with hundreds of others in front of Kobi Nazrul Govt College and Shaheed Suhrawardi College on July 19.

Also the Dhaka city, a murder wa s filed against former Sheikh Hasina, Obaidul Quader, and 89 others in the capital‍‍`s Lalbagh Police Station during the early hours on Sunday.

Kamrul Hasan, the father of Khalid Hasan Saifullah, a student killed during the Anti-discrimination Movement, filed the case.

Besides Hasina and Quader, the case mentions the former law minister, home minister, and information state minister among 91 individuals.

The case document mentions that Khalid Saifullah, a student of the Ideal School and College, participated in the anti-discrimination movement like other students.

On 18 July, law enforcement officers indiscriminately fired at the students with direct support from the accused, resulting in Khalid being fatally shot.

On 20 July, his body was identified in the hospital.

The plaintiff alleged that the officer-in-charge of the police station had been evasive about the case from the beginning, causing agitation among the students.

Kamrul Hasan said that the case was later accepted in the presence of the senior army officials around 2am.

In Rangpur, the case was filed against her and former road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader among 40 people on charge of killing Abdullah Al Tahir, a student of Bangladesh Institute of Glass and Ceramics.

A total of 40 individuals including former ministers and members of the units of Rangpur district and city Awami League, Shwechchhashebak League, Additionally, 300 unidentified persons were also charged in the case.

The accused include former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former law minister Anisul Huq, former foreign minister Hasan Mahmud, and former textiles and jute minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak.

In Joypurhat, Sheikh Hasina and Obaidul Quader were accused in a case filed today over the murder of a student during the Anti-Discrimination Students‍‍` Movement in Joypurhat.

This is the 13th case, including 10 murder cases, filed against Hasina since she resigned and fled the country in the face of a student-led mass uprising on August 5.

Apart from the two accused, 126 other leaders of Awami League, and of its associate bodies Jubo League and Chhatra League (BCL), were also sued in the case.

Najibul Sarker Vishal, a student of class 11 of Panchbibi Business Management Institute, was killed in police firing during the Anti-Discrimination Students‍‍` Movement on August 4.

Najibul‍‍`s father Muzidul Sarker filed the case with the Chief Judicial Magistrate‍‍`s Court in Joypurhat this afternoon, the plaintiff‍‍`s lawyer said.

Judge Atikur Rahman ordered the Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge to take the complaint as an official first information report.

Some 650 were killed and thousands of protesters and bystanders have been injured in the protests waged by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, with hospitals overwhelmed by the influx of patients. a UN report said on Friday.

In Natore, Sheikh Hasina, former Natore-2 MP Shafiqul Islam Shimul, and 109 others were sued on Sunday in a case filed over kidnapping and murder of a student during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement in Natore.

Fazer Ali, father of the deceased student Yasin Islam, who was allegedly abducted and murdered on August 4, filed the case at Natore Sadar Police Station. Officer-in-Charge of the police station, Krishna Mohan Sarkar, confirmed the matter.

Other accused in the case include Sadar Upazila Chairman and General Secretary of the district Awami League Shariful Islam Ramzan, Sadar Municipality Mayor Uma Chowdhury Jolly, and district Awami League President Sirajul Islam, among others.

The plaintiff alleged that during the student-led movement, Yasin was forcefully taken from Madrasa Mor in Natore town, beaten, and held captive at Shimul‍‍`s residence. The following day, the residence was set ablaze, and Yasin’s body was later recovered from the charred remains.
